The School of Information Systems (SIS) at the Singapore Management
University is looking to hire research faculty with strong Computer Science
background who are either:
Fresh Ph.D.s (or students graduating by August 2012)
Postdocs looking for a faculty position
Ph.D.s who are currently in industry but want to return to faculty and research work
Mid-career faculty who are looking to transition to Asia
AND who have strong application & infrastructure building and publishing
records in Distributed Systems or Software Engineering with a specific
interest in the building of large distributed systems. While all areas
related to Systems Research are welcome, we are especially interested in
research expertise related to large-scale, context-aware computing
platforms, cloud computing and privacy-supporting infrastructures.
Currently our school has approx. 35 faculty members (more details are
here), and we are in the process of hiring an additional 10 to 15 faculty
members over the next 3 years.
Our faculty are clustered in five areas:
- Information Security & Trust
- Data Management & Analytics
- Software Systems
- Intelligent Systems & Interaction
- Information Systems & Management
Faculty in the first four areas have done their PhD work in Computer
Science, Engineering, IT or closely related fields, and publish in the
computer science and technology communities. Faculty in the fifth area have
done their PhD work in the economics of Information Technology, and in
empirical methods for quantifying the impact of IT related innovations or
projects. Hence we encompass both deep systems oriented information
technology capability, as well as the ability to analyse and predict the
business and management aspects associated with IT applications, systems,
innovations and transformations. We emphasise collaborative and inter-
disciplinary research, across our technology areas, or between our
technology areas and our IS management area.
The current advertisement is for a tenure-track/tenured position in the
Software System cluster. Current projects and research initiatives in this
cluster include problems related to mobile and pervasive systems, software
modeling and design, human computer interaction and interfaces, software
mining and program analysis and cyber-physical software frameworks. The
cluster's faculty are key members of the LiveLabs Urban Lifestyle
Innovation Testbed (http://livelabs.smu.edu.sg), a S$10M, 5 year effort at
building a globally-unique software platform for real-life experimentation
and testing of next-generation mobile applications, on a large participant
body, at multiple commercial locations in Singapore. While we encourage
applied research (addressing real-world problems), our faculty produce high
quality research that is published in top research venues. The school
facilitates working relationships with industry to make it easier for
faculty members to get real data and examples for research and for
teaching. We are quite selective in who we hire and our benefits and salary
are very competitive to US employers.
Other important things:
- We provide a lot of career mentoring and guidance to pre-tenure faculty.
- Since 2003, we have had a strategic partnership with Carnegie Mellon
University. This allows our faculty to interact very closely with
senior research faculty from CMU. More details are available
at http://www.sis.smu.edu.sg/about-school/academic-partnerships.asp
- We have a strong emphasis on educational innovation and effectiveness.
We believe that our
school should be outstanding in both research and education.
Qualified candidates must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research
and teaching statements and samples of published work. Candidates may
submit softcopy or hardcopy of their application materials to:
