Social Media, such as discussion forums like Reddit, can offer a glimpse of diverse personal and public level health experiences and knowledge, yet it is still an underutilized resource for health. In my talk, I examine a various challenges and methods to utilize social media data for understanding and improving public and personal health issues. Within the context of social computing in social media platforms, I focus on issues associated with topic drift (i.e., topic changes), readability of public documents, sustainment of active participation (i.e. interacting with other members), and long term effects of participating in social media.I also address the challenge of processing and making sense of a large amount of collective knowledge shared in social media via natural language processing and machine learning in conjunction with visualization.
