Nowadays, F2FS, Flash-Friendly File System, is being considered as a default filesystem to keep user data in Android smart phones. Its community has been continued to tune and optimize F2FS given Android workloads. (e.g., atomic writes, runtime de-fragmentation, asynchronous discard, fsync_mode=nobarrier) This talk introduces what kind of issues exist and how we could address them by F2FS along with Android.
Jaegeuk Kim is a Software Engineer in Pixel team at Google, as the maintainer of Flash-Friendly File System (F2FS, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F2FS) in Linux mainline. At the end of 4 years to develop F2FS in production quality, he open-sourced it in 2014 when he was with Samsung. After then, he worked for all the consumer smart phones equipped with F2FS in Motorola Mobility and Huawei respectively. At previous Huawei, he had also investigated server-side topics with F2FS such as SMR, open-channel SSD, Ceph, and key-value stores. During the last decade, he has been exploring how to optimize the Linux storage stack to NAND flash-based storage devices ranging from MTD on raw NAND chips to eMMC/UFS/NVMe/SATA SSDs. He received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2010.
